COLUMBUS — Facing the best track and field athletes in the state is daunting enough for any competitor, but doing it as a freshman under completely altered championship conditions adds an entirely new layer of pressure.
Tiffin Columbian freshman Caroline Newlove handled it all with veteran poise this weekend at the Division II State Track and Field Championships, held at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium on the campus of The Ohio State University.
Competing in an event heavily impacted by Friday's severe weather, officials were forced to pivot from the traditional preliminary-and-final format. Instead, runners competed in a high-stakes, timed-final format on Saturday. Newlove raced out of the second heat, knowing that every single fraction of a second would count against the entire field.
When the dust settled, Newlove crossed the finish line in a blistering 45.76 seconds, securing a 14th-place finish in the state.
For a freshman to reach the ultimate stage of Ohio high school track and field is a massive achievement in its own right. To execute a clean, aggressive race in a timed-final environment—where you are racing the clock just as much as the athletes in the adjacent lanes—speaks volumes about Newlove's bright future with the Tornadoes.
With her first state tournament experience now under her belt, the freshman has officially put the rest of Division II on notice for the next three years.
