Celina - Tiffin Columbian struggled to find its footing Thursday, falling 11-1 to Celina in the Division II sectional tournament. The Bulldogs jumped out to an immediate lead and never looked back, using a high-powered offense to end the Tornadoes' postseason run in five innings.
The damage began in the bottom of the first, where Celina capitalized on a sacrifice fly from Lilly Gonzalez and a two-run double by Hayley Germann to plate four runs. The Bulldogs continued to apply pressure in the second with a Gonzalez RBI double, followed by a three-run third inning fueled by doubles from Maddie Allen and Paiton Rhodes.
Columbian’s offense was kept largely in check by Gonzalez, who earned the win in the circle. She allowed just one run on four hits over five innings. The Tornadoes' lone spark came from Gabby Shock, who finished 1-for-2 and drove in the team's only run. Breanna McNutt, Maddy Richie, and Maizie Mellott each added a hit in the effort.
Mellott took the loss for Columbian, exiting after a difficult opening frame. Celina’s 10-hit attack was led by Germann, who put together a perfect 4-for-4 afternoon with three RBIs. Campbelle Gass also contributed two hits for the Bulldogs, who effectively closed the door on any Columbian comeback with a disciplined defensive performance, including a double play to stifle a late rally.
Despite the tournament exit, the Tornadoes still have two dates remaining on the calendar. They will travel to Fremont Ross on Friday before closing out the year on Memorial Day with a matchup against Calvert for the Honors Game.
