Tiffin - In a high-scoring marathon that came down to the final swing, Columbian Varsity Baseball fell just short in an 11-10 loss to Norwalk on Wednesday. Despite a late-inning offensive explosion that nearly erased a massive deficit, the Tornadoes couldn’t quite complete the comeback in a game where hits and runs were plentiful.
The game took a dramatic turn in the bottom of the sixth inning when Columbian’s bats suddenly ignited for eight runs on four hits. The rally began with a Kael Lawrence RBI single, followed by a productive fielder's choice from Kason Daily. The pressure continued to mount as Jayce Arias lined an RBI single and Ethan Wilcox showed patience at the plate to draw a bases-loaded walk. The defining moment of the afternoon belonged to Johnny Bremyer, who cleared the bases with a towering grand slam to left field, driving in four of his team-high four RBIs and bringing the home crowd to its feet.
Bremyer’s power display was complemented by his speed, as the outfielder also swiped two bases during the contest. Blake Gaulden proved the depth of the Tornadoes' lineup, leading the team with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate.
Columbian’s discipline was on full display throughout the afternoon, as the team worked the count to accumulate seven total walks. Jamison Woessner was particularly selective, leading the squad with three free passes, while also battling through five innings on the mound. Woessner surrendered four earned runs and struck out four in his starting effort.
While the seven-hit attack and the frantic sixth-inning surge put the Tornadoes in a position to win, the early-inning gap proved too wide to overcome. Columbian will travel to Clyde for their next matchup on Thursday.
