Tiffin - The Columbian Varsity Tennis team faced a narrow defeat on Monday, falling 3-2 to Sandusky St. Mary’s Central Catholic (SMCC) to move to 9-8 on the season.
The Tornadoes saw strong performances in the middle of the scorecard. Brock Siesel earned a hard-fought victory at second singles, taking down Eian Eitchill in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4. Columbian also found success in the doubles category, as the first doubles duo of Liam Randell and Parker Nye secured a 7-5, 6-3 win over Luke Spicer and Pavan Gorty.
Despite those victories, SMCC managed to clinch the match by taking the remaining three spots. Pravir Gorty defeated Dravyn Dicken at first singles (6-3, 6-1), while Carter Snyder topped Grant Blonde at third singles (6-1, 6-0). The decisive edge came at second doubles, where SMCC’s Jack Davis and Mason Russell bested Jarrett Jaeck and Brady Miller in a tight second set to win 6-1, 7-5.
The JV squad provided a bright spot for the afternoon, sweeping several matches. Winners included the pairs of Jack Dell and Jackson Vallery, Bentley Schoch and Austin King, and Lucas Widman and Skyler Helmstetter.
Columbian looks to bounce back tomorrow as they host Huron.
