Tiffin - Despite out-hitting their opponents 10-7, the Columbian Varsity Softball dropped a hard-fought 8-5 contest on Monday.

The Tornadoes jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first when Emma Daugherty showcased her discipline at the plate, lining an RBI single on the eighth pitch of her at-bat. After the game was tied in the third, Columbian regained the upper hand in the bottom half of the frame courtesy of a Gabby Shock RBI single.

Maizie Mellott provided the biggest highlight of the afternoon in the bottom of the fourth, launching a two-run home run to center field to extend the Tornadoes' lead. However, the momentum shifted in the later innings as defensive miscues and walks allowed the opposition to reclaim the lead for good in the sixth.

Shock started in the circle for Columbian, putting together a solid four-inning performance where she surrendered just three hits and two earned runs while striking out five. Camryn Haman pitched three innings in relief, striking out three.

Offensively, the Tornadoes were led by Daugherty and Haman, who each collected two hits. Mellott finished the day with two RBIs, and the team showed plenty of aggression on the base paths, totaling four stolen bases—two of which came from Haman.

Columbian will look to bounce back on Tuesday vs Seneca East followed by finishing their game vs Sandusky from last week
