Huron - Despite a persistent offense that out-hit their opponents nine to two, the Columbian Varsity Tornadoes fell 7-3 on Saturday. While the Tornadoes found plenty of grass throughout the afternoon, they were unable to overcome a difficult third inning that ultimately decided the contest.
The Tornadoes wasted no time jumping out to an early lead in the top of the first. Camryn Haman delivered a sharp single to drive in the game’s opening run, capping off a rally that put Columbian on the board immediately. Olyvia Steinmetz and Maizie Mellott led the offensive charge for the Tornadoes, each collecting two hits on the day. Steinmetz finished 2-for-4 with a run batted in, while Gabriella Conley provided a spark on the basepaths by stealing two bases.
Mellott took the loss in the circle for Columbian, pitching two and two-thirds innings and striking out one. Though the Tornadoes' bats remained active until the final out, they were unable to close the gap created by a high-scoring third inning for the opposition.
The Tornadoes will look to bounce back and turn those hits into a victory on Monday when they travel to face Norwalk.
