Sandusky - The Columbian Tornadoes displayed plenty of offensive firepower on Monday, out-hitting their opponents by a two-to-one margin, but a chaotic first inning proved too much to overcome in a 15-10 loss at Perkins. Despite racking up 12 hits as a team, the Tornadoes were haunted by a difficult defensive stretch early in the game that allowed the lead to slip away.
Columbian came out swinging in the top of the first, jumping to a 2-0 lead. Camryn Haman drove in the game’s first run with a sacrifice fly, followed quickly by an RBI single to center field from Maddy Richie. The momentum shifted violently in the bottom half of the inning, however, as a combination of walks and defensive miscues allowed nine runs to cross the plate before the Tornadoes could escape the frame.
The Tornadoes refused to go quietly, battling back throughout the afternoon to keep the pressure on. Gabby Shock led the hit parade for Columbian, finishing a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate. Breanna McNutt, Richie, Haman, and Maizie Mellott each contributed to the scoring effort with an RBI apiece, while Mellott added pressure on the basepaths with two stolen bases. The defense also showed flashes of brilliance, highlighted by a cleanly turned double play.
Maizie Mellott took the loss in a tough starting assignment, while Shock provided a steadying presence in relief. Shock threw five and two-thirds innings, allowing seven runs—only three of which were earned—while striking out one and limiting the damage to six hits.
Though the Tornadoes' comeback attempt fell short, the team showed resilience by nearly matching the scoreboard despite the early nine-run deficit. Columbian will look to carry that offensive momentum back home as they prepare to host Norwalk on Tuesday.
