Norwalk - The Columbian varsity boys tennis team faced a narrow defeat on Thursday, falling 3-2 in a hard-fought road match against Norwalk. Despite several resilient performances across the lineup, the Tornadoes were unable to secure the decisive third point in a contest that saw multiple sets go to tiebreakers.
In the most grueling match of the afternoon, Columbian’s Dravyn Dicken battled through three sets at first singles against Norwalk’s Jeremiah McCreary. Dicken took the opening set in a 7-3 tiebreaker, but McCreary rallied to take the following sets 6-4, 6-2, clinching a vital point for the home team. At third singles, Brady Miller also fell in a competitive straight-set match, losing 6-1, 6-4 to Jacob Burger.
Columbian found success at second singles, where Brock Siesel delivered a dominant performance. Siesel swept past Carter Swick with a perfect 6-0, 6-0 victory. The Tornadoes also found life in the doubles bracket. The first doubles tandem of Liam Randell and Parker Nye displayed great poise, defeating Edward Ramos and Roman Snyder 6-4, 7-6(2) to keep the overall score close. However, the second doubles pair of Jarrett Jaeck and Grant Blonde came up just short in their match against Levi Dickerson and Jack Pittenger, falling 7-6(4), 6-3.
While the varsity squad narrowly missed the win, the junior varsity ranks showed significant depth. Columbian swept through the JV doubles matches, picking up wins from the pairings of Jackson Vallery and Jack Dell, Lucas Widman and Austin King, and Ian Cortez and Skyler Helmstetter.
The Tornadoes will look to bounce back quickly as they prepare to return to the road. The team travels to face Fremont this coming Monday.
