WILLARD — The Columbian varsity tennis team faced a difficult road test tonight, falling to host Willard by a 4-1 margin. The loss moves the Tornadoes to an 8-5 overall record on the season as they navigate a busy stretch of their schedule.

Columbian’s lone victory in the varsity ranks came at second singles, where Brock Siesel secured a point for the visitors. Despite the final score, the Tornadoes fought through several competitive frames, including a marathon battle at third singles. In that match, Jarrett Jaeck pushed Willard’s Lucas Winans to a third-set tiebreak before falling 6-1, 4-6, 10-6. At first singles, Dravyn Dicken was defeated by Jaxson Hall in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.

The doubles courts saw Willard sweep the action. In the first doubles slot, Liam Randell and Parker Nye fell to Levi Schag and Mason Dawson 6-2, 6-2. The second doubles pair of Brady Miller and Bentley Schoch put up a valiant effort to force a tiebreak in their second set but ultimately dropped a 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) decision to Gavin Warner and Owen Sheppard.

While the varsity squad struggled to find its rhythm, the junior varsity contingent showed significant depth with a string of victories. Dominant performances were turned in by the doubles pairings of Carson Hayes and Austin King, Jack Dell and Jackson Vallery, Christian Keefe and Gideon Donnersbach, and Lucas Widman and Skyler Helmstetter, all of whom finished the night in the win column.

The Tornadoes will have little time to dwell on the loss as they look to bounce back immediately. The team travels to Norwalk tomorrow to continue their away stand.
