Sandusky - Columbian Varsity Softball suffered a heartbreaking 9-8 defeat on Wednesday, falling on the final play of a back-and-forth extra-inning battle. The game remained deadlocked until the bottom of the eighth inning, when a walk-off single finally tilted the scales. Despite the loss, Columbian's offense was potent throughout the afternoon, actually out-hitting their opponents 12 to 11.
Columbian set the tone early, jumping out to a lead in the first inning after Camryn Haman drove in a run with a single. They extended that lead in the second frame when Maizie Mellott found green grass in center field for an RBI single. The Tornadoes showcased disciplined defense and a high-contact approach, led by Gabby Shock, who turned in a stellar three-hit performance at the plate. Maddy Richie was also a key contributor, finishing 2-for-3 with a team-high two runs batted in.
On the rubber, Haman started the contest and provided five solid innings, striking out eight batters and allowing five earned runs. Shock took over in relief, pitching two and two-thirds innings and striking out one. Defensively, the Tornadoes were perfect in the field, finishing the game with zero errors. Gabriella Conley anchored the defense, recording eight plays to keep the game within reach until the very end.
The Tornadoes will look to shake off the tough ending and refocus as they continue their road stretch. The team is scheduled to travel to Perkins for their next matchup this Friday.
