TIFFIN – A late-inning surge by Madison Comprehensive proved too much for the Columbian Varsity Baseball on Monday, as a tied ballgame spiraled into a 10-2 defeat following a six-run seventh inning.

Columbian jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first when Conner Reese drove a single into play to put the Tornadoes on the board. Reese, batting from the left side, provided the bulk of the team's offensive production on the day, finishing 1-for-3 with both of the team's RBIs.

The Tornadoes held the advantage until the third inning, when Madison Comprehensive used a single and a defensive error to knot the score. The game remained a stalemate until the fifth, when the visitors managed to scratch across two more runs to take a 4-2 lead.

In the top of the seventh, Madison Comprehensive capitalized on three hits, a sacrifice bunt, and a hit batsman to plate six runs, effectively putting the game out of reach.

Blake Gaulden earned the start for the Tornadoes and turned in a solid effort, pitching 4.2 innings. He surrendered six hits and four runs—only two of which were earned—while striking out five and walking just one. Offensively, Columbian finished with four hits on the day, coming from Reese, Jayce Arias, Johnny Bremyer, and Jaxson Little.

Columbian will look to shake off the loss and find their rhythm again as they hit the road to face Norwalk on Wednesday.
