TIFFIN — A big second inning proved to be the difference Monday as Edison pulled away from Columbian for an 18-8 victory in a high-scoring matchup.

Edison erupted in the top of the second, stringing together timely hits and taking advantage of walks to build a commanding early lead. The inning was highlighted by a three-run double from Delaney Fields, along with additional run-scoring hits from Lariah McMinn, Natalie Desautels, and Abby Cloud.

Columbian responded with flashes of offense throughout the game. Olyvia Steinmetz got the Tornadoes on the board in the fourth inning with a solo home run to center field.

The Tornadoes continued to chip away in the fifth inning. Maizie Mellott delivered a two-run homer to left field, while Steinmetz added an RBI single and Gabriella Conley drove in a run on a groundout to trim the deficit.

Columbian added two more runs in the sixth when Maddy Richie blasted a solo home run and Corinne Plott scored after tagging up, but the early deficit proved too much to overcome.

Steinmetz and Mellott each led Columbian with two hits and two RBIs. The Tornadoes also turned a double play defensively.

Edison finished with 11 hits and showed patience at the plate, drawing seven walks and swiping six bases. Peyton Bissell drove in four runs, while Cloud paced the Chargers with three hits.

Columbian will return to action Wednesday when it hosts Willard.
