The Tiffin Columbian Athletic Hall of Fame Committee is proud to announce five inductees for the Class of 2026 Tiffin Columbian Athletic Hall of Fame: Derek Kneeskern (Class of 2010), Beth “Kolbe” Hardcastle (Class of 2004), Char Pope, Lindsay “Cook” Newlove (Class of 1995), and the 1978 Tiffin Columbian Boys Cross Country Team.
A member of the Class of 2010, Kneeskern was one of the most accomplished multi-sport athletes in school history, excelling in football, basketball and track & field while earning 11 varsity letters during his career with the Tornadoes. On the football field, Kneeskern earned First Team All-Ohio honors twice during his career. On the basketball court, he became one of Columbian’s all-time leading scorers, becoming the third player in school history to surpass 1,000 career points and currently ranking fifth all-time in scoring in program history. In track & field, Kneeskern dominated the long jump, capturing four Northern Ohio League (NOL) Long Jump Championships. He also helped lead Columbian to success at the state level as a member of the 4x100-meter relay team that finished fifth at the state meet.
Hardcastle, a member of the Class of 2004, competed for Columbian in volleyball and swimming before going on to achieve remarkable success at the national and international level. She continued her swimming career collegiately at Harvard University and later became Columbian High School’s only Olympic-level athlete through her accomplishments in Paralympic swimming. Hardcastle competed for five years in Paralympic Swimming Nationals and represented the United States internationally. At the 2008 Summer Paralympics, she set a new S3 American Record. She also captured four gold medals at the World Para Swimming World Cup event in Brazil and concluded her decorated career holding 14 American swimming records and one Pan American swimming record.
Former coach Char Pope also joins the 2026 Hall of Fame class for her foundational role in building girls athletics at Columbian. A graduate of Miami University in 1973, Pope served the Tornadoes from 1973 through 1987, coaching in multiple sports including Varsity Girls Basketball, Varsity Girls Volleyball, Girls Track, and as an Assistant Softball Coach. Pope made history as the first head coach in the history of the Columbian volleyball program and also assisted with the school’s first softball team, helping lay the groundwork for both programs in their early years. During her tenure, she led Columbian volleyball to three Northern Ohio League championships and two district championships, and six of the athletes she coached later went on to be inducted into the Columbian Athletic Hall of Fame.
Newlove, a member of the Class of 1995, was a standout three-sport athlete in cross country, basketball and track & field. She remains one of the most accomplished distance runners in school history and still holds three Columbian track records: the 800 meters (2:18.5), the 1600 meters (5:16.5), and as a member of the 4x800 relay team (9:39.57). In cross country, Newlove was a state qualifier in 1992, a two-time regional qualifier, and captured the Northern Ohio League individual championship in 1992. On the basketball court, she was a two-year starter and served as team captain for the 1994–95 Columbian team that finished undefeated in Northern Ohio League play. In track, she helped lead the Tornadoes to the state level as a member of the 1994 state-qualifying 4x800 relay team, while individually qualifying for regionals twice in both the 800 and 1600 meters and once in the 400 meters.
The 1978 Columbian Boys Cross Country Team also earned induction after one of the most dominant seasons in program history. The Tornadoes finished runner-up at the Class AAA State Championships and captured multiple championships along the way. During the 1978 season, Columbian went undefeated in dual meets and finished 4th or better at all ten large meets against a combined 129 teams. They won the Northern Ohio League championship scoring 20 points with all runners finishing in the top 10. They won the Sectional championship, where the team recorded a perfect score of 15 points by placing 1st through 5th. The Tornadoes followed that performance with a District championship, scoring 28 points with all runners again finishing in the top 10. Members of the historic team included Phil Gase, Brian Walton, Kevin Hersh, Wayne Wolff, Gary Larsen, Todd Hefner, and Paul Traunero. The team was coached by Norman Grimes, HOF class of 1993.
The 2026 Hall of Fame Class will be recognized pregame of Columbian's Week 1 football game against Fremont Ross on August 21st. The class will then be officially inducted during the Tiffin Columbian Athletic Hall of Fame Banquet on August 22nd at 5:00 p.m. at Sentinel Career Center.
The accomplishments and lasting impact of these athletes, teams, and coaches have helped shape the proud tradition of Columbian athletics and make them deserving members of the 2026 Tiffin Columbian Athletic Hall of Fame Class.
